Ferrous vs. Non-Ferrous Metal
Ferrous metals contain iron — old appliances, swing sets, car parts, structural steel, and most heavy machinery fall in this category. They are attracted by a magnet. Non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, bronze) do not contain iron and command significantly higher prices per pound.
When sorting your scrap, separate copper wiring, aluminum cans, and brass fixtures from steel and iron to maximize your payout.
