A standard mattress takes up to 23 cubic yards of landfill space, and up to 90 percent of its materials — steel springs, foam, cotton batting, wood — can be recovered and reused. Colorado has no mandatory mattress recycling law, but several programs make it easy to keep mattresses out of landfills.
Front Range Mattress Recycling Options
- ▸GreenDrop / Spring Back Colorado: Colorado's nonprofit mattress recycling program. Drop off locations in the Denver metro area. Check springbackcolorado.org for current sites.
- ▸Eco-Cycle (Boulder): Accepts mattresses at their Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM) in Boulder. Fee applies. Call 303-444-6634.
- ▸Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site (DADS): Accepts mattresses and box springs for a small surcharge over standard disposal fees.
- ▸Retailer take-back: When purchasing a new mattress from stores like Mattress Firm or Sleep Number, ask about their take-back program — many offer free pickup of your old mattress with delivery.
What Mattress Recycling Recovers
