The reality of refrigerator disposal
Refrigerators and freezers can't be disposed of like ordinary appliances because of refrigerant. Even old units that don't run still contain trace amounts of refrigerant — typically R-12, R-22, R-134a, R-410A, or older CFC formulations — that are regulated under federal Clean Air Act provisions. Releasing refrigerant intentionally or through negligent handling is a federal violation that can result in fines.
The disposal process for a refrigerator or freezer requires refrigerant recovery by a certified technician, component recycling (compressor, copper coils, steel cabinet, insulation), and documentation that refrigerant was properly recovered.
This is why "just drop it at the curb" doesn't work. Most city waste services won't take refrigerators because they don't have refrigerant recovery infrastructure. The unit will sit at your curb indefinitely or generate a citation.
The process is fast and inexpensive when handled correctly. We route every refrigerator and freezer we collect to certified appliance recyclers who recover refrigerant under EPA-compliant protocols and recycle the rest of the unit. The whole process happens within 24-48 hours of pickup.
Modern refrigerators have additional considerations. Smart fridges with embedded electronics may have data on local networks. We recommend disconnecting any network connections and resetting the unit before removal. We don't access stored data or settings.

A note on labor-intensive jobs: Stairs, basement access, or units requiring removal of cabinetry/doors may run higher — we quote in writing before any work begins.
Curbside pickup discounts: If the refrigerator is already disconnected, drained, and at the curb or just inside an open garage when we arrive, we offer a discount.
Where it actually goes
Every refrigerator and freezer we collect routes to certified appliance recyclers, not to landfills directly. A certified HVAC technician recovers refrigerant from the unit's sealed system, then the components are processed: compressor and motor to scrap metal, copper coils (significant scrap value) to metal recyclers, steel cabinet to metal recycling, insulation foam recycled or incinerated depending on facility, and plastic interior components to plastic recycling where available.
A typical refrigerator is 80-90% recycled by weight at a certified facility.
We don't try to donate refrigerators. Donation centers (ARC, Goodwill, etc.) generally don't accept refrigerators because of refrigerant handling requirements. The exception is newer units (less than 5 years old, working) which we can sometimes route to Habitat ReStore or Salvation Army.
Disposal options before calling us
Alternatives that may be cheaper or free:
City of Golden appliance pickup
Some cities offer free appliance pickup. Check cityofgolden.gov for current program status. Pros: free. Cons: limited schedules, may take 2-4 weeks, strict curbside requirements.
Retailer haul-away
Most appliance retailers (Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Costco) will haul your old refrigerator when delivering a new one, often free with purchase. Pros: same-day, included in delivery, properly routed. Cons: only works if you're buying new.
Xcel Energy refrigerator recycling
Xcel Energy offers a free refrigerator recycling program for second refrigerators and freezers. They pick up and pay you $50 per unit. Pros: free + payment. Cons: only for working units that are second/extra refrigerators, scheduled weeks out.
Scrap metal drop-off
Some scrap metal yards take refrigerators with proper refrigerant recovery already performed. Pros: potential payment. Cons: requires you to handle transport and pre-arrange refrigerant recovery (specialty service).
What to expect from our crew
Text us photos of the refrigerator with location and access notes (stairs, basement, narrow doorway, ice maker hookup). Written quote in 10 minutes.
Before we arrive, disconnect the unit, drain any water lines (ice maker hookup), and open the doors to let it warm up if it's been running. We bring appliance dollies, straps, and door protection. Most refrigerator removals take 15-25 minutes on site.
