Why Coal Creek Canyon is different

Coal Creek Canyon isn't a single neighborhood. It's a 50-square-mile canyon community spanning three counties — Jefferson, Boulder, and Gilpin — with roughly 1,200 residents at around 450 addresses scattered along Highway 72 and the network of dirt roads branching off it. There's no Main Street. There's no city hall. The closest thing to a community center is the Wondervu Café at the top of the canyon and the Coal Creek Canyon K-8 school off Twin Spruce Road. The fire district, the Coal Creek Canyon Fire Protection District, serves as the de facto local authority for emergencies, evacuations, and Community Wildfire Protection Plan coordination.

For a junk removal crew, this geography creates real operational challenges that most franchises won't take on.

The roads. Primary access is Highway 72 from the east (off Highway 93 north of Golden) or Highway 72 west to Highway 119 (Nederland or Black Hawk). Both are paved and maintained. But the moment you leave Highway 72, you're on dirt — Twin Spruce, Gap Road, Gross Dam Road, the Coal Creek Heights network — and those roads vary from well-maintained gravel to steep one-lane tracks. We've operated in this canyon long enough to know which are passable for our 16-foot truck and which require a smaller vehicle or a walk-down approach.

The Gross Dam expansion. Denver Water's Gross Dam construction project has closed sections of Gross Dam Road and affected Flagstaff Road traffic on an ongoing basis. We track the closure schedule and route accordingly — Highway 72 stays the primary corridor regardless.

Black ice. The lower canyon, near where Highway 72 meets Highway 93, sits in deep shadow for much of the morning. Roads at the top of the canyon can be dry while the lower canyon has black ice into the early afternoon. We plan winter routes around this — top of canyon first when conditions warrant, lower canyon after the sun has cleared the shadows.

Wildfire risk. Coal Creek Canyon is mapped in the official CWPP as a high-risk fire-adapted community. The 2023 Bear Fire (7.5 acres, human-caused, contained in Golden Gate Canyon area) and the 2011 Indian Gulch Fire (1,570 acres at Mount Galbraith) are recent reminders. When Coal Creek Canyon Fire Protection District declares Stage 1 or Stage 2 fire restrictions, we comply absolutely — no spark-producing tools, no idling in tall grass, no open flame for any reason.

Our owner has spent six-plus years working junk removal jobs across the Front Range — hundreds of jobs completed before launching Troops — including post-fire cleanups, defensible space work, and routine canyon clearouts. That experience matters here. The work isn't theoretical.

The job types we see most in Coal Creek Canyon

Estate cleanouts for long-term residents. Coal Creek Canyon attracts people who stay for decades — homesteaders, retirees, artists, off-grid families. When a longtime resident passes or moves, the property usually contains 30-plus years of accumulated possessions: workshop contents, outbuildings, old vehicles, RVs, project leftovers, and family heirlooms mixed with junk. Full property cleanouts on canyon homesteads can take three to five working days depending on access and volume. We work with executors, family members, and estate attorneys to clear the property and provide donation receipts for tax purposes.

Post-wildfire cleanup. Burned debris, damaged appliances, ash-contaminated materials, melted aluminum, charred furniture. Post-fire cleanup is regulated work — we follow Jefferson and Boulder County hazardous waste protocols and provide documentation for insurance claims. After Coal Creek-area fires we coordinate with affected families through the Fire Protection District when possible.

Defensible space cleanup. Slash piles from chainsaw work, downed trees, accumulated brush from yearly clearing, old fencing, and outbuilding contents that create fire fuel near structures. We haul to approved disposal sites and coordinate with Jefferson County's slash collection programs when timing aligns.

Property maintenance debris. Old wood stoves, defunct solar arrays, satellite dishes, ham radio towers, generator equipment, and the general accumulated junk of decades of self-sufficient mountain living. How we handle canyon access and fire restrictions

The Coal Creek Canyon job plan looks different from every other service area. Here's how it runs:

Pre-dispatch check. Before sending a truck, we verify current road conditions via Coal Creek Canyon Fire Rescue updates and Boulder County alerts. We check the Coal Creek Canyon Fire Protection District's current fire restriction stage. We confirm the access route based on your specific address and any Gross Dam closures in effect.

Vehicle selection. Highway 72 corridor addresses get our standard 16-foot box truck. Deep-canyon properties on Twin Spruce, Gap Road, or off Gross Dam Road may use a smaller vehicle if access requires it. For some upper-canyon addresses, we'll position the truck at a Highway 72 turnout and use a smaller truck or trailer for the last mile.

Crew briefing. Every canyon job starts with a crew briefing on the day's fire restriction stage, the specific access challenges of your address, and any wildlife concerns. Our crews are trained to identify recent bear sign and to handle propane tanks, fuel cans, and other potentially flammable items with care.

On-site protocol during fire restrictions. When Stage 1 or Stage 2 restrictions are active, we don't run chainsaws, grinders, welders, or anything else that could spark. We don't idle vehicles in tall grass. We don't use open flame for any reason. All cleanouts are non-spark operations.

What we don't do is show up unprepared. The canyon punishes that. We've turned a lot of jobs around for residents who hired a flatlander crew that didn't understand canyon logistics.

Pricing transparency

Most Coal Creek Canyon addresses are within our standard service radius and get the same pricing as our other foothills work. Deep-canyon addresses past the 35-minute drive window (upper Wondervu, Crescent, parts of Twin Spruce) may have a small route-day surcharge — we quote it upfront in writing, never as a surprise.

A note on labor-intensive jobs: Some jobs take longer than a standard pickup — full property cleanouts, items requiring long carries from the back of a property, stairs, attics, crawlspaces, or hoarder-condition spaces. When a job requires significantly more labor time than the standard tier, we'll quote you a revised price in writing before any work begins. We never start work and surprise-bill afterward.

Staged-pickup discounts available. If items can be staged at the end of your driveway, in front of your garage, or in another easily-accessible location ready for loading, we offer a discount off the standard quote. Discount amount confirmed at quote based on job size and access.

Local disposal and donation flow — veterans first

What we remove from a Coal Creek Canyon property doesn't go straight to a landfill. At least 50% of what we haul gets donated or recycled — and the donation routing follows a deliberate order.

Veterans organizations always go first. As a veteran-owned company, we route usable furniture, household goods, clothing, and small appliances to PickUpPlease.org — the donation program run by the Vietnam Veterans of America — before any other partner. PickUpPlease serves the Denver metro and proceeds from sold items fund VVA programs supporting veterans and their families.

When PickUpPlease can't take an item, or when timing doesn't work for a scheduled pickup, we route to local partners — ARC Thrift on Kipling, Goodwill on Wadsworth, and other neighborhood charities serving Jefferson and Boulder counties. We provide itemized donation receipts for tax purposes on request.

The rest of the routing:

Only the items that can't be donated, recycled, or salvaged go to permitted landfills.
